I love the change of the calendar from one year to the next. It’s like wiping the slate clean and beginning anew. It brings to mind the oft quoted saying “This is the first day of the rest of your life.” It brings an automatic sense of hope of something better, that no matter how wonderful the previous year was, with the new year it will be all the more wonderful. If it had been a difficult past year, filled with chaos or drama, personal challenges or family upheavals—even the loss of someone loved and dearly missed—with the new year, it brings a natural optimism that somehow THIS year will be better.
With my recent visit ‘to the motherland’ north of the border over the holidays, I enjoyed reconnecting with friends, visiting with family, cramming in as much dancing as I could, and thoroughly enjoyed the festive holidays. Here in San Felipe, there was no shortage of festivals and parties for those who remained in our fair city for the holidays. Big shindigs were the order of the day at Parrot's Cracker, the Pavilion, Margarita House, the Sweet Spot and El Padrino. The Lighted Parade on the Malecon, the Posada festival in the Ejido, brought with them traditional Mexican festivals, and our village by the Sea was regale in color and activities, festive parties and much merriment. With the new year, new festivals await the visitor or local resident to explore and sample, enjoy and savor!
For a small seaside township, San Felipe has an abundance of activities and things to do and enjoy. And lots of talent! Elvis recently found his way to San Felipe and wowed the audience at Parrot’s Cracker-- Robbie Castaneda personified Elvis, shaking those hips like never before!
The SCORE Baja races will shortly hit our sandy roadways and desert track—Poker runs and cancer walks—road trips to interesting places--Carnaval and Flamenco Dancers—Music galore by our talented musicians and singers—Blues and Art festival--dancing everywhere! So many things to look forward to right here in our Village by the Sea.
As the chilly nights give way to the warming sunshine, the hummingbirds return to their favorite feeders and other varied birds are busily building their springtime nests, nestled tightly in between branches of prickly cactus branches. The desert awakens from its winter slumber with renewed energy, bursting with optimism that will soon arrive.

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m passionate about dancing. With the brand new San Felipe Social Dance Club, which meets on Mondays at the Ejido Social Salon, I can now pursue my passion along with others who also love to dance! The community hall provides a large dance area where both lessons in the dance steps, as well as dance parties add to the other dance venues San Felipe offers. Whether enjoying the singers at Karaoke Night, or enjoying very talented musicians and the smoking hot bands San Felipe seems to specialize in, or dancing at the Social Dance Club, a good time and new friendships are almost guaranteed.

The Singles group has swelled its numbers from barely existing a couple of years ago to a good two dozen --most recently enjoying the reasonably priced and delectable cuisine at Rancho Allegra restaurant.
As the season’s events multiply and give many choices how we San Felipians wish to spend our time, our energy and our dollars, let us also remember the needs of our local larger community. Volunteers are always welcome at such enterprises as Volunteers Without Limits, VIVA, the Food Bank, and the various organizations that assist children. A paradise is a place where caring about each other, love and giving to others is the norm—and I can’t think of any better place that fills that description than this Village by the Sea.
